Students evaluate food and beverage service establishments, explain basic food and beverage handling principles, demonstrate satisfactory food and beverage service skills and adapt service standards to meet the needs of guests.

Students explore concepts that affect the finances of an individual, including a code of conduct, the economic environment, acquiring and using financial resources and the effects of government legislation.

Course FIN1015: Accounting Prep

Students are introduced to accounting and terminology unique to financial accounting. They become familiar with financial statements, generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) and how to prepare for the process of starting up a business.

Course FIN1020: Accounting Cycle 1

Students are introduced to the accounting cycle for a service business. They will analyze and record business transactions up to trial balance for the fiscal period of a business using terminology unique to financial accounting.

Course FIN1030: Accounting Cycle 2

Students complete the accounting cycle for a service business, preparing financial statements and closing accounts. They also will explore other factors of a business, including budgets.

Course FIN2020: Retail Accounting 1

Students apply specialized accounting procedures associated with buying and selling goods in a retail system with a credit system and a partnership.

Students continue to apply specialized accounting procedures by preparing financial statements, analyzing adjusting and closing entries and completing the accounting cycle for a retail business.

Course FIN2060: Personal Taxation

Students examine the Canadian income tax system through the preparation of a variety of personal income tax returns, completed manually and/or electronically.

Course FIN3010: Advanced Accounting

Students apply advanced accounting procedures, including capital assets and uncollectible accounts, used by a variety of businesses. Students also prepare adjustments, using the accrual method of accounting, and examine manufacturing or departmental accounting.

Students examine and explain management accounting, which involves optimizing capital assets for maximum return on investments. Students also examine various internal systems used to safeguard business assets.

Students examine the accounting procedures related to proprietorships, partnerships, corporations, and other entities. Students determine the effect the different forms of business ownership have on the equity section of the balance sheet.

Students examine the content and structure of financial statements and prepare customized financial statements for a variety of businesses.

Students evaluate the basic structure and function of non-profit organizations in society and focus their examination of the non-profit sector on Alberta and a specific rural or urban community. Students perform as volunteers with a non-profit organization and evaluate their volunteering experience.

Course CCS3030: Aging

Students examine principles of care related to aging and gain an appreciation for the contributions seniors can make to the health and wellness of other individuals and communities. Students develop the attitude, knowledge and skills related to the care of older adults. The impact of aging on the individual is explored and students gain an appreciation for resources available to help individuals maintain independence and to assist their family, peers and community.

Students use basic sewing skills and techniques to construct a home or personal accessory.

If there is no type on the page, it isn’t graphic design, it is fine art. Students learn about the power of typography and its uses in today’s world.

Students learn the fundamentals of consumer-based digital image acquisition, management, composition, manipulation and editing software to improve image composition.

Course COM1145: Animation 1

Students are introduced to a variety of animation techniques and produce a simple animation; the focus is on basic skills, including planning, keyframing, stage set-up and production, used to create a moving picture.

Students acquire the attitude, knowledge and skills necessary for achieving and maintaining a healthy pregnancy and parenting a healthy child in the first year of life. Students focus on the impact of pregnancy on the physical, mental and social well-being of the mother and newborn. Students examine the events of labour and delivery and the importance of post-natal care. Students gain an appreciation for practising a healthy lifestyle as it pertains to the individual, family, peers and community.

Course HCS3150: Advances in Medical Technology

Students research current technologies in medical diagnosis and treatment and examine biomedical ethics surrounding current and emerging technologies.

Course HSS1010: Health Services Foundations

Students examine fundamental attitudes, knowledge and skills to prepare for further study in career pathways in health, recreation and community services. Concepts related to the determinants of health, the dimensions of wellness, basic principles of anatomy, physiology and disease, and basic safety and reporting protocols for providing care to individuals in health, recreation, volunteer and community support settings are reviewed.

Students learn the importance of nutrition and hydration for the promotion and maintenance of physical, emotional and social health and wellness throughout life. Students evaluate food and supplement choices, the effects of activity on nutritional requirements and the use of labels to improve daily nutritional intake at all ages.

Course FOR1010: Forests & Society

Level: Introductory

Students study the social, cultural, economic and environmental significance of forests, with particular focus on the impact of society as a whole and the impact individuals have had on forests.

Course FOR1020: Forest Ecology in Regions of Canada

Level: Introductory
Prerequisite: None

Students investigate forest ecosystems and explain the structure and function of trees in relation to life processes. Students also learn to identify factors that determine the distribution of forests, as well as research forest regions of Canada with an emphasis on specific species.

Course FOR2010: Forest Protection & Stewardship

Level: Intermediate

Students examine the Land-use Framework and the Alberta Land Stewardship Act as they relate to forestry to understand what measures are being taken to promote environmental stewardship.

Note: Although this course involves analyzing the impact of lifestyle on forests, the major emphasis is on active participation through protection and stewardship (e.g., commitment and empowerment through personal and shared actions).
